  • The STEM Factor: get those girls enthused

    Date
    02 Feb 2011
    Location
    University of Northampton

Women into Engineering and Science!  How many of us out there are working towards improving the situation that exists in the UK and get those girls into STEM based careers?  How many times have you heard people say “if only I had realised what Engineering and Science was really about”  or  “I didn’t know that women could be successful in those sorts of careers!”

Funded by National HE STEM programme on WEDNESDAY 2nd FEBRUARY 2011 from 10.00 – 4.00 at the University of Northampton, we are holding a FREE event to identify the key messages that work and share innovative ways to engage with girls. We are delighted that Kate Bellingham, National STEM Careers Co-ordinator and ex-presenter of Tomorrow’s World, who is also passionate about getting girls into engineering, has agreed to host the event.  Hear from key practitioners, industry, join break-out groups, network and ask those questions you have always wanted to get an answer to.

This event is relevant  to Teachers of STEM subjects, Careers IAG Practitioners; STEM Ambassador Role Models and anyone involved Widening Participation or has an agenda to encourage females into STEM areas.

Optoelectronics is the marriage of light with electricity and is a powerful tool for attracting students’ interest. It is the basis of television, medical imaging, communications, mobile phones, digital cameras, CD players, computer screens, and much more. Together with a number of teachers and young academics, Rank Prize Funds has designed three sets of hands-on experiments illustrating facets of the subject and, following a successful pilot in Scotland, is introducing them into schools throughout the UK.

We have free equipment for 24 schools in the East Midlands.

At the workshop you will be able to try out the kit and we’ll run through the ways it can be used in the classroom.  Contact details for your school will be taken and you will be sent the kit shortly afterwards. In order to receive all three kits, a teacher from your school will have to attend three twilight workshops or the full day training

    Booking is essential. Other dates (all at same location): 3rd March 4pm to 5.30pm - Illumination & Communication, 31stMarch 4pm to 5.30pm - Vision & Displays, 18th March 9.30am to 2.30pm – all 3 workshops.
