To introduce the STEM Student Journalist project to students and teachers, providing students and teachers with the tools in order to engage within the project. The session will consist of an overview of the project, plus a hands-on activity with Rob Pittam, BBC Broadcast Journalist and Sarah Sheppard (BBC Camera Woman).

3. Format of the workshop
Students will cover different areas of media coverage – TV, radio, internet. They will look at how to choose a story, and different story telling techniques. The aim of the workshop is to provide hands-on activities for the students, enabling them to learn key journalistic/ reporting and camera skills, which can then be utilised in the students reporting.
Part 1 - Presentation
The purpose of this section is to look at how to choose a story, examine different story telling techniques depending on what type of media being used, i.e. Tabloid, Broadsheet, Radio, Internet etc. Examine media ethics and how that affects the way a story is told. For example, why does the Sun exist and why is it the top selling newspaper?
Part 2 – Newsroom Activity
Students will engage in a newsroom scenario with a breaking news story.
4. Places are limited
Places are open to students 11 - 22 years. Due to popular demand, places are limited to a maximum of 10 students and 2 teachers per school, college or university.
5. STEM Student Journalist - National Science and Engineering Week (NSEW) 2010 Competition (12-21 March 2010)
We are inviting all STEM Student Journalists to submit their reports covering NSEW events and stories to enter into a special competition during NSEW (12-21 March 2010).
- Report format either film, audio or written.
- Categories and prizes to be announced soon.
- Deadline for reports for competition: Friday 2nd April 2010.
