SETting an Example!

23 Jan 2009

Opening Doors for women and girls in Science, Engineering, Construction and Technology.  Are you a young woman thinking about G.C.S.E, A-levels and University choices?  Ever thought about pursuing a career as an engineer, a forensic scientist or a clinical researcher? Then LeicestHERday’s “SETting an Example” is made for you!

This FREE event is being held on Wednesday 4th February 2009, 10.00am till 3.00pm at the Percy Gee Building, University of Leicester.  It promises to be a fun and informative day designed to encourage young women and girls to pursue non-stereotypical careers in SECT industries.

The day will offer attendees the chance to interact with real female scientists who have achieved successful careers in these fields and put questions to them.   Exhibitors from a whole variety of organisations will be on stand by to offer advice and support in SECT careers.  Lively practical sessions are planned for all who attend in Chemistry, Physics, Genetics, Geology and Construction across the campus.  The hugely popular “Lab in a Lorry” science testing extravaganza will be there.  All sessions are designed to give young people the chance to explore science through hands-on experiments.

Job opportunities in these industries are thriving but many girls can feel discouraged from entering such careers due to the fact that they are mostly male dominated.  This event will show that it is possible to have successful careers in these industries and not be stereotyped because of their gender.  “SETting an Example” aims to break the barriers of these clichéd attitudes and ensure that doors are opened to girls who would like to pursue SECT career opportunities.

Clare Farrow, event co-ordinator for LeicestHERday Trust said: ‘This is a fabulous opportunity for young women and girls to come along and see the variety of careers available to them.  It should be a real eye opener and we hope to inspire all our visitors.’

All are welcome, please contact Clare Farrow at LeicestHERday Trust on 0116 257 5615 or email clare@leicestherday.org.uk.  Individual and group bookings taken.  Morning and afternoon sessions available.  Coach drop off points available at the university campus.
