Cutting down on travelling the length of the region for meetings is a new goal set by the East Midlands STEM Partnership which it hopes others will follow.
Utilising the latest teleconference technology, fifteen STEM Partners got together on Thursday 15 May for a chance to exchange news and to debate gaps in STEM provision. Callers phoned-in from as far afield as London, York and Lincoln saving an estimated 950 miles in carbon emissions based on a return journey to Nottingham.
Bi-monthly teleconferences are an integral part of the communications plan for the emda-funded STEM Partnership, formed last October to be the voice of science, technology, engineering and mathematics educational provision in the East Midlands.
Speaking after the call, STEM Partnership Steering Group Chair, Cathy Brown commented: “This is such a refreshing way to share ideas and meet new partners. Not only is it a great step forward for the environment, it also saves time and money. I look forward to many more in the future.”
The STEM Partnership is looking to build its membership and assist communications and knowledge-sharing through various channels. An extensive and well-resourced website has now been launched to encourage information exchange and, when combined with the teleconferences and Forum Events, will mean that science, technology, engineering and mathematics stay high on the region’s agenda.
The next STEM teleconference will take place on Tuesday 8 July.
