A Leicestershire science teacher and Lead Educator for the National Space Centre’s Space Academy, Judith Green, has been awarded a Royal Society Hauksbee Award last week at a special reception held at the Society’s London headquarters. Nine teams of students aged between 12 and 14 from Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire schools have spent 12 weeks working on a project designed to inspire the scientists, engineers and business entrepreneurs of the future. The students are taking part in the Pera Foundation’s Go4SET (Go for Science, Engineering and Technology) programme, which is run in association with the Engineering Development Trust. Having completed their project, the students will be attending a Celebration and Assessment Day at Pera in Melton Mowbray on the 17th March.

More than 50 students aged between 12 and 14 from thirteen schools across, Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire have spent 10 weeks working on a project designed to inspire the scientists and engineers of the future. A report published today by HEFCE shows that more students are now studying 'vulnerable' subjects such as physics, chemistry and maths than in 2005-06, when the Government first became concerned about these subjects (note 1). Since 2005-06, the number of people studying physics, chemistry and maths at undergraduate level has risen by 6.8 per cent to 47,269.
