County schools get on board to make science fun

12 Apr 2008

Pupils in the East Midlands are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Lab in a Lorry this month, as the East Midlands Development Agency (emda) funded initiative continues to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers across the region.

The 44ft lorry, developed by the Institute of Physics (IOP), contains three state-of-the-art laboratories and offers 11-14 year olds the opportunity to explore science through specially created, hands on experiments. With interactive displays, explanations as to why the sky is blue or demonstrations on the power of sound through a smashing glass, each child can see, hear and feel why science is fun.

Already making an impact throughout the East Midlands, budding scientists across the region are saying: “The Lab in a Lorry was cool. They let you try out the experiments and get really messy, but you learn loads too.”

Lab in a Lorry is managed by STEMNET and run by SETPOINTS and volunteers from a variety of science and engineering backgrounds. With at least one volunteer to every six students, everyone gets to try their hand at experimental science and think about the surprises and questions that arise.

Andrew Morgan, emda’s Skills and Communities Director, said: “Lab in a Lorry provides a fantastic experience for young people in [insert county] since it generates excitement and curiosity by letting them explore and question the effects of science on everyday life.  Inspiring young people to see the potential of this subject as part of a successful career is vital in ensuring a highly-skilled, future workforce for the East Midlands.

“Our investment in the Lab means it is now exclusively available for the East Midlands region.  However, its success heavily relies on the many volunteers – ranging from University students who want to build their CV to local companies seeking to establish links with the local community – who give up their time to help out.  I would encourage anyone who is interested in becoming a volunteer to get involved and put their name forward.”
